The Rachakonda Cyber Crime police helped a 65-year-old woman recover ₹70,01,788 she lost in a ‘digital arrest’ scam.
The victim, Geeta Upadhyaya, a resident of Uppal, received a WhatsApp call on December 8, 2024 from a person posing as ‘Cyber Crime Mumbai officer, Mohit Sharma’.
The fraudster alleged that a SIM card issued on her name was being used for illegal activities, including harassment and dissemination of obscene content. He claimed the SIM card was implicated in 24 complaints under an FIR and accused a fraudster, Naresh Goyal, of involving her in criminal activities.
Under pressure, she was instructed to transfer funds, including fixed deposits and PPFs, amounting to ₹1.58 crore to an account specified by the scammers. The victim was further warned not to share details of the alleged ‘digital arrest’ or the ongoing investigation with anyone.
On realising that she is being cheated, Geeta filed a complaint at the Rachakonda Cyber Crime Police Station in LB Nagar. The police then formed special teams to investigate and the accused were tracked, arrested, and the stolen amount was recovered from a bank in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
DCP Cyber Crime Nagalakshmi and the Rachakonda Police Commissioner lauded Inspector Maqbool Jani and his team for their quick response and effective handling of the case. The recovered amount was returned to the victim.
